Magic has always been around. Always spoken of with a hushed tone an a sly wink, it has kept itself hidden throughout the ages; it has been respected over the past millennia; it has been honored and those elders and wise men and women tied with it have been trusted and revered. Up until, in the history of the world, “recently”. It all began around the fifteenth century, when a spring of people popped almost completely out of the blue in retaliation to a small “vampire” scare near the outskirts of Frankfurt, Germany. They called themselves “The White Knights”, and though their vampire was proved nothing more than a myth, they followed a rumor to Hungary about a man who could change himself, at will, into a wolf and back again. This time, they did, indeed, get lucky. And with an uproar, it was proven that these creatures were more than legends, myths, and stories told by parents to scare their children into good behavior… They assisted in the Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, and quite possibly every little uproar about witchcraft and sorcerery that’s popped up in history.
After the Salem burnings, the three members of the last remaining Witch’s council met up with the alphas from the last shapeshifting “family”, and they, together, invited the Commander of the Knights to meet with them. Though witches and shapeshifters have been enemies since the beginning of time (due to their differing opinions on magic, among other things), they combined and stood united against the common enemy and, contrary to how the human Knights handled their situation, worked out a treaty. It was simple: their existence will never become known to humans, they shall never harm a human, and they shall stay within the boundaries issued to them by the Knights in return for an eternity of peace and, hopefully in time, prosperity. The Knights agreed, assigning them the newly discovered territory of New Zealand to take as their own - witches on the Northern Island, shapeshifters to the South.
And all went well until a horrible day in March of 2006. It was merely an accident that set off a supernatural war in the hills of New Zealand. A shapeshifter crossed into witch territory at the same time that a young wizard was driving home - it so happened that the shapeshifter took the form of a dog. She was accidentally struck by the wizard in his car - immediately he knew who he hit. But she was still in her dog form. He had no time to waste. He called the police, and prayed that they would be somewhat delayed so he could do what he might to transform her back to her human shape. One cop showed up early - he watched as the wizard put his hands to the dog’s chest and she morphed into the figure of a gorgeous woman… the treaty had been broken. And not only just by territorial ruling, but because someone without a drop of magical blood in their veins paid witness. Though no one believes the “silly officer”, it still angered the Knights… and now, once again, two mortal enemies must become one force to fight for one common goal. Peace. |
